Why Start With Ocean Plastic at All?

Plastic waste in marine environments doesn't break down the way organic material does — instead, it breaks apart, fragmenting into smaller and smaller pieces that persist in the water for a long time. Recovering that plastic before it fragments further, and turning it into a usable material, is one of the more direct ways to put existing waste back to use rather than manufacturing new material from scratch.

That's the starting premise behind OceanKnit™: instead of treating recovered marine plastic as a problem to manage, treat it as a raw material and build a supply chain around collecting, cleaning, and re-spinning it into something wearable.

Recovered Ocean Plastic, Not "Ocean-Bound" Plastic

Not all recycled ocean plastic starts in the same place, and the distinction is worth understanding.

Ocean-bound plastic refers to waste found near marine environments — often within roughly 50 kilometers of a coastline — that's at risk of eventually washing into the water but hasn't yet.

Recovered ocean plastic is different. It's material that has already reached the ocean, rivers, or shorelines: discarded fishing nets, marine debris, and other waste actively polluting marine ecosystems right now.

OceanKnit™ is built from the second category. The plastic used in Blauw's swim trunks is collected from the water itself, not intercepted before it gets there. Both categories are legitimate forms of recycled content, but they're not interchangeable claims, and it's worth knowing which one a given "ocean plastic" product is actually referring to.

From Marine Debris to Yarn

Turning recovered plastic into wearable fabric takes more than a recycling symbol. Here's the process, step by step.

Step 1: Collection

Recovered plastic — including discarded fishing nets and other marine debris — is gathered from oceans, rivers, and coastlines.

Step 2: Processing With the SEAQUAL Initiative

Blauw developed OceanKnit™ in partnership with the SEAQUAL Initiative, an organization that coordinates the collection and processing of marine plastic into a consistent, high-performance yarn. This step is what separates a viable textile input from a pile of collected debris — the plastic has to be cleaned, sorted, and rebuilt into a material strong and uniform enough for fabric production.

Once the yarn is ready, it's woven into OceanKnit™ using fine threads in a tight weave. That construction detail does double duty: it's the reason the fabric feels smooth against skin instead of stiff or "plastic-y," and the reason it dries quickly after a swim.

Why Recycled Doesn't Have to Mean Rough

A common assumption about recycled swimwear is that there's a tradeoff between sustainability and comfort — that using ocean plastic means accepting a stiffer, less refined fabric in exchange for a better environmental story. That tradeoff isn't inherent to the material itself; it usually comes down to how fine the yarn is and how tightly it's woven.

Recovered ocean plastic, once processed into yarn through the SEAQUAL Initiative, performs comparably to virgin polyester in terms of strength and flexibility. What determines the feel of the finished fabric is the weaving process that comes after — which is why OceanKnit™ was engineered around thread fineness and weave density from the outset, rather than treating comfort as a secondary concern to solve for later.

This is also why not every "recycled swim trunks" product feels the same. Two pairs of shorts can both legitimately use recycled marine plastic and still feel completely different against skin, depending entirely on how the yarn was spun and how the fabric was woven afterward. The recycled content tells you where the material came from; the weave tells you how it will actually wear.

Why the Same Weave Delivers Comfort and Quick-Dry Performance

Most recycled swimwear involves a tradeoff — better for the ocean, but rougher on the skin. OceanKnit™ was engineered to avoid that compromise by treating comfort as a design requirement from the start, not an afterthought.
