Why Seaweed

Seaweed grows fast — much faster than trees — and is widely recognized as one of the fastest-growing natural carbon sinks. Unlike tree planting, which can take decades to show a measurable impact, seaweed establishes and starts absorbing carbon within a much shorter window.

It also requires no fresh water, fertilizer, or arable land to grow, since it's cultivated directly in coastal waters.

Beyond carbon, established seaweed also:

• Protects coastlines from erosion by reducing wave energy
• Creates habitat for fish, crustaceans, and other marine life
• Helps remove excess nutrients and pollutants from the water
• Supports oxygen levels in the surrounding water
• Supports small-scale, regenerative coastal economies

Our Partnership With Seatrees

Blauw partners with Seatrees, a nonprofit focused on restoring ocean ecosystems through blue carbon projects, to make this happen. "Blue carbon" refers to carbon captured by coastal and marine ecosystems — seaweed, mangroves, and seagrass among them — rather than land-based forests. Every time someone buys a pair of Blauw swim trunks, that purchase funds the planting and maintenance of seaweed at one of Seatrees' restoration sites.

Seatrees works directly with local communities to grow seaweed in high-impact coastal zones, which supports both the ecological goals of the project and the local economies tied to it. It's a direct, measurable action rather than a general promise: one short sold funds one seaweed plant, at a specific site, through a named partner organization.

This kind of partnership also means the work isn't a one-time planting. Seatrees' restoration sites are maintained over time, which matters for seaweed specifically — a newly planted area needs monitoring and upkeep before it functions as a stable, self-sustaining habitat.

Why We Built It This Way

Blauw's swim trunks are already made from recycled marine plastic, which addresses one part of the ocean's problem: keeping waste out of the water. Seaweed planting addresses a different part — restoring ecosystems that are already degraded.

Combining the two means every purchase does two things: it uses a material that's already been removed from the ocean, and it funds active restoration work in coastal zones. Neither one substitutes for the other — recovered plastic doesn't undo existing ecosystem damage, and seaweed planting doesn't reduce the plastic already in circulation. Doing both is the point.
